PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University varsity cheerleading team will be in competition this Saturday at the New England Cheerleaders Association Open Cheer and Dance Championships, held at East Haven High School in East Haven, Conn.
The Panthers, who have been performing at home PSU men's and women's basketball games this winter, will compete in the All-Girl Division and will go up against teams from Quinnipiac University, Central Connecticut State University, Western Connecticut State University, Eastern Connecticut State University, and Babson College. The teams will be judged on their three-minute routine, which include a variety of gymnastics, tumbling, stunting, dancing, and aerials, in unison.
"We are eager to perform in this weekend's competition," said head coach Erin Boylan. "I am confident in our routine and excited to see what the girls put out on the floor on Saturday."
Plymouth State did not participate in last year's event but took first place over Eastern Connecticut at the 2008 NECA Open Championships. The Panther cheerleaders are in their fourth season as a varsity program at PSU.
There are no seniors on this year's team and just four juniors - Leah Bergeron-Rosa (Manchester, N.H./Central), Jackie DelMonte (Nashua, N.H./North), Jess Rickard (North Attleboro, Mass.) and captain Chandra Touch (Portland, Maine). The four sophomores are Haleigh Cahill (Manchester, N.H.), Jessica Dichard (Nashua, N.H./North), Stephanie Kronmiller (Foxboro, Mass.) and Cayla Micelli (Beverly, Mass.)
The remaining seven members are freshmen - Jess Caisse (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne), Megan Hurley (Billerica, Mass.), Rebecca Leary (Holliston, Mass.), Brianna Neveux (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin), Whitney Walker (Dover, N.H.), Amelia West (Nashua, N.H./South) and Brittney White (East Winthrop, Maine).
