PSU Cheerleading squad to make season debut

Panthers to perform at Saturday’s basketball twinbill

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University varsity cheerleading team will make its 2010-11 season debut this Saturday when the Panthers perform at the Panther men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader at Foley Gymnasium.

The Panthers will make their debut Saturday in the Little East Conference twinbill against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (women at 1:00 p.m., men at 3:00 p.m.)  The cheerleaders will perform at PSU home men’s and women’s basketball doubleheaders this winter as well as a couple of competitive tournaments next semester.

The Panthers are led by head coach Erin Boylan, who is now in her second season at Plymouth State.  This is PSU’s fifth season with cheerleading as a varsity sport.

2010-11 Panther Season Outlook

Coach Boylan and her squad are excited about the season, and the coach says the team is raring to go for this Saturday’s debut.

“We’ve had a great preseason,” said Boylan.  “I was able to plan everything a lot earlier and it has been a lot smoother this year.  I think we will be a lot more polished and flashy this season, a crowd-pleasing kind of team.  We have more game stunts to show off, and some new dance routines.”

Part of the preseason training included a speed camp, said Boylan, where the staff from the University of Louisville came to PSU and taught some new stunts to the Panthers.

“We learned some advanced stunts, and some harder stunts,’ said Boylan, “which will be great to show off and it will improve our program.”

The Panthers have six returnees back from last season who are joined by five newcomers.  Boylan said the group is already blending together.

“All of the returners have done a good job as the core of the team,” said Boylan, “encouraging the younger girls, getting everyone into the gym during the preseason, and doing the workouts.  They’ve all been great.”

Coach Boylan is excited about the group of Panther flyers this season.  She says they will provide plenty of excitement for the fans.  The group of fliers include freshmen Lyndsey Rasicot (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro), Harlie Shaul (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) and Rissa Meyer (Plymouth, N.H. /Plymouth Regional) and sophomore Jess Caisse (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne).

“Lyndsey is an incredible flyer and tumbler, and I think people will be amazed when they watch her,” said Boylan. “All of our flyers will be fun to watch.”

The Panthers are led by senior co-captains Chandra Touch (Portland, Maine/Portland) and Jess Rickard (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro).  PSU also has two other seniors, Leah Bergeron-Rosa (Manchester, N.H./Central) and Jackie Delmonte (Nashua, N.H./North), as well as sophomore Amelia West (Nashua, N.H./South).

The Panthers will be looking for strong performances next semester when competitions come around.

“We’re looking to improve in that area,” said Boylan.  “Last year we competed at a tournament with some Division I schools, and that was a little unfair.  This year we’re going to compete against schools from our division and see where we stack up.  We’re excited to perform this year.”
