PSU Cheerleaders finish second in competition
Panthers runner-up at Beast of the East Winter Nationals
HARTFORD, Conn. – The Plymouth State University cheerleading team made its first competitive appearance of the season Saturday, placing second at the Spirit Cheer Beast of the East Winter Nationals.
The Panthers finished second in the College All-Girl Division, finishing with a score of 60.082 (out of 100). Sacred Heart University won the event, 6.5 points ahead of Plymouth State.
“It was a good experience for our girls,” said second-year head coach Erin Boylan, “but we did not do as well as we had expected. We had a few stunts fall and lost some points due to deductions, but we scored high in stunts, pyramids and tumbling. Our highest score was in running tumbling.”
Boylan said the team should have more confidence going into their next competition.
“Now that we’ve had one competition, we will be more prepared for the next one,” added Boylan. “We’re looking forward to getting back on the mat on Feb. 26 at Central Connecticut’s Devil’s Dare.”
PSU will also perform at PSU’s remaining home basketball games at Foley Gymnasium, including a pair this week – Tuesday on “Spirit Night” vs. Keene State and Saturday on “Senior Day” vs. Rhode Island College.
The Panthers are led by senior co-captains Chandra Touch (Portland, Maine/Portland) and Jess Rickard (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro). PSU also has two other seniors, Leah Bergeron-Rosa (Manchester, N.H./Central) and Jackie Delmonte (Nashua, N.H./North).
