STONEHAM, Mass. – The Plymouth State University competitive cheer team made its season debut Saturday afternoon at the Bravo All-Stars Competition, taking first place in the College All-Girl Division.
PSU head coach Erin Boylan was pleased with the performance of the Panthers, who are in their first season as a competitive cheer squad rather than a traditional sideline group.
"It was a great start for us, and I'm very proud of them," said Boylan. "We did a really good job on our pyramids, and did pretty well on some of our stunts and our tumbling."
The Panthers performed a team routine that last about two-and-a-half minutes, with numerous acrobatics, tumbling and stunting. Aside from a missed air skill and some timing issues that need to be worked out, Boylan says the team was right on.
"We had several athletes who performed really well," said Boylan. "Freshman Sonya MacMillan did an awesome job flying; she stuck her stunts and did a good job as the top of our pyramid. Freshman Catrina Wade and junior Amelia West did some great tumbling passes. I'm just really happy about the whole thing. We're looking forward to performing again."
The Panthers will be back on the mat at the JAMfest Nationals in Boston next weekend, Apr. 14-15.
