Two PSC Football Players Receive Top Honors

By George Hodgson, Student Assistant

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two Plymouth State College football players have received recognition from the Eastern College Athletic Conference and the Freedom Football Conference for their individual performances in last Saturday's 29-10 win over Coast Guard Academy at Cadet Field.

Freshman running back Russ Massahos (Windham, NH) was chosen Rookie of the Week in both the ECAC New England Division and the FFC. Junior defensive back Colt Meredith (Saugus, MA) was named FFC Special Teams Player of the Week and received honorable mention from the ECAC.

Massahos got off to a very quick start in what would be a career day for the youngster. The redshirt freshman scampered 74 yards for a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage, and later sealed the victory for PSC with the final score of the day on a 1-yard dive. Massahos finished the day with a career-high 207 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries, along with catching one pass for eight yards. The rookie has 391 yards rushing with five touchdowns on the season and a team leading 5.4 yards a carry. Massahos has rushed for over 100 yards in two straight games, and was named the FFC's top rookie in last week's voting.

Meredith sparked the Panther special teams by coming up with a huge block punt, which he recovered and returned 26 yards for a PSC score. Meredith would help strengthen the defense by collecting a team-leading nine tackles along with a sack and two tackles for a loss. The rejuvenated Panther defense gave up just 47 total yards in the final three quarters after giving up 127 yards in the opening frame.

PSC, 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the FFC, moved up to #7 in this week's ECAC Division III New England poll. The Panthers remain in third place in the conference behind Springfield (8-0, 5-0) and Kings Point (5-2, 3-1).

The Panthers will return home this Saturday (Nov. 7) when they face Kean (NJ) at 12:00 p.m. The non-conference game will be televised on WMUR-TV channel 9.
