Weekly Honors For PSC Football players
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Three members of the Plymouth State College football team were honored by the Freedom Football Conference Monday for their efforts in last Saturday's 17-7 victory over Norwich University.
Sophomore linebacker Chris Kelliher (Goffstown, NH) was selected FFC Defensive Player of the Week, and sophomore halfback Russ Massahos (Windham, NH) and freshman quarterback Matt Simpson (Auburn, Maine) were named to the FFC Weekly Honor Roll. Simpson was also named ECAC Division III Rookie of the Week, and Kelliher was selected to the ECAC New England Weekly Honor Roll.
The trio was instrumental in PSC winning its opening FFC game over the Cadets. The Panthers are now 2-1 overall and have moved up to fourth in the ECAC New England Division III poll, behind Bridgewater State (3-0), Western Connecticut (3-0), and Williams (1-0).
A 6'0", 200-pound sophomore, Kelliher has led the Panthers in tackles the past two weeks. He made 13 stops (seven unassisted) against Norwich, including three sacks and three others behind the line of scrimmage. Kelliher leads the team in tackles (36), tackles for loss (12), and sacks (4), along with his one interception.
A 5'10", 205-pound redshirt sophomore, Massahos recorded his third career 100-yard rushing game Saturday, carrying the ball a career-high 40 times for 148 yards. He increased his season average 100.3 yards/game, which ranks second in the FFC.
A 6'2", 180-pound freshman, Simpson came off the bench for his collegiate debut Saturday in exciting fashion. He entered the game with PSC leading 3-0 in the third quarter, and immediately tossed an 83-yard touchdown pass to WR Charlie Schubert (Manchester, NH) on his first official attempt. Simpson finished the game with three completions on five attempts for 114 yards and a TD, along with two rushes for 15 yards.
The Panthers return home to Currier Field for FFC contests the next three weeks, hosting Western Connecticut, Kings Point and Springfield on consecutive Saturdays, all beginning at 12 noon.
