Weekly honors for PSC Football players
By Sean Kelly, Student Assistant
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Three Plymouth State College football players earned honors this week despite the Panthers' 51-33 setback at home last Saturday to Springfield College.
Sophomore halfback Russ Massahos (Windham, NH) was named to both the Freedom Football Conference Weekly Honor Roll and the ECAC New England Weekly Honor Roll, and teammates Matt Simpson (Auburn, Maine) and Eric Taylor (Saratoga Springs, NY) joined Massahos on the FFC Honor Roll.
Simpson, a freshman quarterback, was named to the Honor Roll for the third straight week. He passed for two touchdowns, completed 26 passes on 36 attempts, and had no interceptions. The first touchdown strike came in the second quarter, when he launched a 35-yard bomb to junior Tim Shaw (Bristol, RI). He found the back of the end zone again with a 41-yard bomb to Taylor in the fourth quarter.
Massahos compiled 168 all-purpose yards, with six catches for 57 yards and 24 rushes for 111 yards. He has now earned 613 all-purpose yards, 546 rushing and 67 rushing for the season. It was Massahos' second 100-yard effort of the season and fourth of his career.
Taylor was productive on both the special teams and the offensive side of the ball, with two plays of over 40-yards. The first was a 65-yard kick-off return to the Springfield 15-yard line, which Plymouth was unable to capitalize on. Then early in the fourth quarter the running back hooked up with a 41-yard Simpson pass for a touchdown.
The Panthers, 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the FFC, were dropped from the ECAC Division III New England poll after the loss to Springfield. Following three straight FFC home games, PSC plays a non-conference tilt this Saturday (Oct. 23) at Bentley College (2:00 p.m.).
