Top Weekly Honors for PSC Football players

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two of the four top weekly honors announced by the Freedom Football Conference this week are Plymouth State College players, thanks to their efforts in a 17-12 non-conference victory at Bentley College last Saturday.

Senior safety Jason Marcell (Stoughton, Mass.) was selected FFC Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman defensive tackle Nate Laita (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) was named Rookie of the Week. In addition, sophomore running back Russ Massahos (Windham, NH) was also placed on the FFC Weekly Honor Roll.

Marcell and Laita were instrumental in Plymouth State's defensive performance that limited Bentley to a minus-five yards rushing on 34 attempts. Laita was also selected ECAC New England Rookie of the Week.

A 6'3", 195-pound senior, Marcell turned in another strong defensive effort. He registered five total tackles (two unassisted) along with one forced fumble and three pass break-ups. He also picked off his third pass of the season with five minutes remaining in the game, thwarting a Bentley rally and preserving the Panther victory. Marcell is tied for sixth in the FFC with his three interceptions.

A 6'4", 250-pound freshman, Laita has thrived since moving from tight end to the defensive side of the ball. He recorded five total tackles against Bentley (three unassisted), including three sacks. His sack and forced fumble at the Bentley 18-yard line late in the second quarter led to a PSC touchdown that gave the Panthers the lead for good.

A 5'10", 205-pound redshirt sophomore, Massahos compiled 116 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in the game. He rushed 22 times for 97 yards and one TD, and caught two passes for 19 yards and a score. Both of his touchdowns came in the final two minutes of the first half, turning a 6-3 Bentley lead into a 17-6 PSC advantage at halftime. It is Massahos' third FFC Honor Roll selection this season.

The Panthers, 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the FFC, return to conference action this week in the final home game of the season. PSC hosts Coast Guard Saturday (Oct. 30) at Currier Field (12 noon).
