PSU Football hosts William Paterson Saturday
Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, 1:00 p.m., Currier Field, Plymouth, N.H.
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Both schools will be seeking their first win of the season Saturday when Plymouth State University hosts William Paterson University in a non-conference football game at Currier Field.
The Panthers and Pioneers will kick off at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. William Paterson is making its first visit to Plymouth after PSU traveled to New Jersey last season. The Pioneers have dropped their first two games this season, while the Panthers were blanked in their debut last Saturday, spoiling the debut of new head coach Paul Castonia.
PSU is looking for more consistency following last week's 29-0 whitewash against UMass Dartmouth. The Panther offense showed signs of life despite the loss of its starting quarterback on the first series (Ryan Diamond is likely out for the season). Plymouth State was within a touchdown (7-0) at halftime against a UMD team that has won 12 straight regular season contests and went to the 2002 NCAA Tournament.
A member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference, William Paterson has suffered non-conference losses to Delaware Valley and Salisbury to start the season. The Pioneers are averaging 265 yards of offense, but have hurt themselves with 10 turnovers. WPU went 3-7 in 2001 and 1-9 last season, with its only victory coming against Plymouth State.
This will be second meeting between these two schools, with Paterson capturing last year's series debut in New Jersey, 30-20. It will be only the fourth game in history between Plymouth State and a school from the state of New Jersey. In addition to last year's game, the Panthers also defeated Kean University in 1998 (27-12) and 1999 (40-0).
PSU announced last week two seniors who were voted as the 2003 team captains - running back Jason Bordas (Elmore, Vt.) and linebacker Tim Boothroyd (Amesbury, Mass.).
