Kings Point dumps PSU Football
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore reserve tailback Adam Franco (Hypoluxo, Fla.) rushed for 179 yards and one touchdown Saturday afternoon to lead the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) to a 28-0 victory over Plymouth State University in a Freedom Football Conference game at Currier Field.
Kings Point accumulated 269 of its 317 yards on the ground as the Mariners improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the FFC. Plymouth State lost for the fifth time this season, including all three conference games.
Franco, who had only one career rushing attempt (for no gain) prior to Saturday, scored on an eight-yard run less than three minutes into game. He finished with eight runs of at least 10 yards, and ended up only 13 yards shy of the Kings Point single-game record. Franco shared time in the backfield with sophomore Jamal Locklear (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who carried 16 times for 62 yards and one TD.
Mariners sophomore QB Matt Wilkenson (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) completed only 3-of-7 pass attempts, but two were for scores. He connected on a three-yard scoring play with senior WR Darren Haefele (Indialantic, Fla.) late in the first quarter to put Kings Point up 14-0, and added an insurance TD early in the fourth quarter with a 36-yard toss to sophomore WR Mike Huzyak (Woodstock, Ga.).
The Plymouth State offense put together 13-play and 9-play drives on its only possessions of the third quarter, but turned the ball over on downs each time deep in Kings Point territory. Sophomore Frank Dore (Teaneck, N.J.) led the Mariners defensive effort with 16 tackles, including 12 solo stops.
PSU freshman QB Chris Langlais (Winslow, Maine) was 9-for-19 for 87 yards in his first career start. Senior Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./West) led the Panthers with four catches for 40 yards.
Saturday's outcome marked the first time in the nine-game series between PSU and Kings Point that the visiting team came out on top.
Kings Point returns home to host St. Lawrence and Western Connecticut the next two Saturdays. Plymouth State has another FFC home game next Saturday against FFC leading Springfield.
