Springfield runs past PSU Football

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman Andrew Jackson (Pennsville, N.J.) and junior Tim Brouillard (Plymouth, Mass.) combined for 203 yards rushing and three touchdowns Saturday afternoon to lead Springfield College's football team to a 33-13 non-conference victory over Plymouth State at soggy and drenched Currier Field.

The Pride used their strong running game to defeat the Panthers, rushing for 361 of their 380 total yards. Jackson carried 19 times for 75 yards and three TDs, while Brouillard finished with 17 carries and a game-high 128 yards. Springfield won its second straight game to improve to 2-4 overall, while PSU drops to 2-5.

Both teams struggled with the wet weather conditions. Springfield fumbled the football nine times, losing five, while PSU lost two fumbles and finished with only 165 yards of offense.

Jackson put the visitors on the board midway through the first quarter, going in from eight yards out one play after Plymouth State fumbled deep in its own territory. Springfield extended the score to 14-0 midway through the second quarter on Jackson's one-yard plunge, capping a 12-play, 69-yard drive.

Plymouth State got on the board with five minutes to go in the second quarter after recovering a Springfield fumble at the SC eight-yard line. Senior QB Jimi Lampron (Rochester, N.H.) connected with sophomore John DeMarco (Milford, N.H.) on an eight-yard pass play, and junior Chris Smith's (Maple Shade, N.J.) extra point kick made it 14-7.

Springfield went 60 yards on six plays on the ensuing possession, capped by a one-yard sneak by sophomore QB Chris Sharpe (Derry, N.H.). The Pride missed the extra point, but led 20-7 at the intermission.

Jackson scored his third TD of the day for the only score of the third quarter, finishing off a 16-play, 65-yard Springfield drive with a one-yard run. Sophomore Joe Czarnecki (Shelton, Conn.) made it a 33-7 Springfield lead with a 15-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter.

PSU did not give up, and junior DB Dan Fallon (Manchester, N.H./Central) gave PSU another score by picking up a fumble and running 42 yards for a touchdown. Fallon, the team's leading tackler on the season, had another strong game, making 12 total tackles, including 11 unassisted. Senior LB Jake Meserve (Dover, N.H.) also had a solid game for the Panther defense with 11 tackles, 10 unassisted.

Plymouth State returns to action next Saturday with a road game at Husson College in Bangor, Maine (1:00 p.m.) Springfield plays three of its final four at home, beginning the next two Saturdays with Empire-8 match-ups against St. John Fisher and Ithaca.
