PSU Football player named ECAC Defensive Player of the Week
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - One of the seniors on the Plymouth State University football team has been honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for his outstanding performance on Senior Day in a Panther victory last Saturday.
Senior linebacker Jake Meserve (Dover, N.H.) was selected ECAC Division III Northeast Defensive Player of the Week. Meserve was also named to the D3football.com "Team of the Week" after his efforts in PSU's 31-20 victory over Mount Ida in the season finale three days ago.
A 5-11, 211-pound linebacker, Meserve finished with a team-high 10
tackles (seven solo) against the Mustangs. He also recorded one
forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and one interception as PSU
finished the season on a winning note. His first fumble recovery
set up a Panther touchdown, and his interception came in the fourth
quarter, helping seal the victory for the home team.
A four-year veteran, Meserve finished second on the team in tackles this season with 56 (41 solo). He has also collected three interceptions, two pass break-ups and two fumble recoveries. Meserve was among the top four tacklers on the team the past three seasons, and finished his career with 139 tackles (97 unassisted).
This week's recognition marks the sixth time this season that a PSU player has received weekly honors from the ECAC. Freshman DB Kynan Mello (Beverly, Mass.) was named to the ECAC Weekly Honor Roll following PSU's 14-7 win over UMass Dartmouth on Sept. 10; junior DT Jeff Ethier (North Attleboro, Mass.) and junior TB Kyle Clark (Bradford, N.H.) were both honored following PSU's 31-8 victory over Becker on Oct. 8, Ethier as Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Clark on the Weekly Honor Roll; junior DB Dan Fallon (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) was named Defensive Player of the Week after PSU's 33-13 loss to Springfield on Oct. 15; and senior DE Pat Quinlan (Saugus, Mass.) was named Defensive Player of the Week after PSU's 21-19 win over Husson on Oct. 22.
The Panthers completed the season with a 4-6 overall record under third-year coach Paul Castonia. PSU moves into the New England Football Conference in 2006.
