PSU Football player receives weekly Gold Helmet Award

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - University of Massachusetts quarterback Liam Coen (Newport, R.I.), and Plymouth State University running back Jeff Mack (Milford, N.H.), a senior captain, received the Boston Globe Gold Helmet Awards Wednesday at the New England Football Writers luncheon at Harvard's Hall of History in the Murr Center.

Coen, the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) recipient, completed 25-of-36 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns through the air and one on the ground to lead No. 4 UMass to a 45-42 win over Holy Cross. The sixth-best single-game yardage total in UMass history, Coen also had his ninth-career 300-yard game as well as his ninth-career three-touchdown game. For his efforts, Coen was also named The Sports Network's FCS national offensive player of the week.

Mack, the Division II/III winner, rushed for 204 yards with two touchdowns to lead Plymouth State to a 36-28 win over Saint Anselm College, the Panthers eighth-straight home win. He added a 38-yard scamper on PSU's third offensive play, then added a three-yard run in the third quarter. Mack's performance landed him a spot on the New England Football Conference weekly honor roll. (At right, Mack is presented his award by PSU Sports Information Director Kent Cherrington)

"I would like to thank the Boston Globe and the New England Football writers for this award," Mack told the gathering of media and coaches at the luncheon.  "I would also like to thank Coach (Paul) Castonia and running backs Coach (Lou) Desloges, and I would like to thank my teammates.  If you could have seen the holes they opened for me, they made it easy for me."

Massachusetts returns to action this Saturday at James Madison at 3:30 p.m. Plymouth State will hit the road to take on Mount Ida College Saturday at 1 p.m.
