Panther linebacker named Defensive Player of the Week
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two members of the Plymouth State University football team were honored by the New England Football Conference Monday for their performances in last Saturday's 20-14 overtime triumph over Nichols College.
Junior linebacker Josh Morgan (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) was named NEFC Defensive Player of the Week, and senior Nick Cavallo (Salem, N.H./Salem) was selected to the NEFC Weekly Honor Roll. They are the fourth and fifth Panthers this season to earn weekly recognition from the conference.
A 6'1", 218-pound linebacker, Morgan racked up a game-high 12 tackles (11 solo), with four tackles for losses totaling seven yards, one forced fumble, one pass break-up, and an interception. The interception, his first of the season, came at the PSU 20-yard line on Nichols' first possession of overtime, setting up the game-winning score. Morgan is in his first year at linebacker after playing fullback and quarterback for the Panthers his first three seasons.
Morgan leads the team with 32 tackles this season, including one sack and seven tackles for lost yardage. He is ranked 14th in the NEFC in tackles by a linebacker.
A 6'1", 187-pound wide receiver/punter/kicker, Cavallo earned weekly recognition for his work on special teams. He averaged 39.1 yards on 10 punts, with two punts downed inside the Nichols 20-yard line. Five of his 10 punts were 40 yards or longer, including all four in the fourth quarter. Cavallo also made his only extra point kick attempt that put PSU up 14-7 in the 4th quarter. Cavallo is ranked seventh in the NEFC in punting average (35.7 yards per punt).
The Panthers, 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, travel to MIT this Saturday for a Boyd Division encounter (1:00 p.m.)
