MASCAC Weekly honor for PSU Football player
Smith named Special Teams Player of the Week for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – A junior on the Plymouth State University football team has been honored by the Massachusetts State Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) for his performance in last Saturday's 56-28 loss to Bridgewater State University.
Junior defensive back Chris Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) was named MASCAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Smith stepped in as a reserve as a kickoff return man and punter and made the most of his opportunity, earning weekly conference honors for the first time in his career.
A 5-9, 186-pound DB, Smith averaged 46.5 yards on four kickoff returns, including an 80-yard burst for a touchdown in the second quarter. He had a 44-yard return into BSU territory in the first quarter that set up PSU's first touchdown and a 36-yarder in the second period to give the Panthers good field position. Smith also handled PSU's punting duties against the Bears, averaging 34 yards on his three boots, and collected five tackles and a pass break-up on defense.
The Panthers, 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the MASCAC, visit league-leading Framingham State this Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
