Panthers recognized in football and field hockey

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two Plymouth State University student-athletes were recognized with weekly conference honors Monday after posting victories in Panther games last week.

Junior cornerback Blair Zentek (Simsbury, Conn.) was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Football Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman Kate McPherson (Conway, N.H./Kennett) was selected the Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey Rookie of the Week.

A 5-11, 179-pound corner, Zentek made two interceptions and three tackles in PSU's 30-14 victory over UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, running one pick back for a touchdown. His first interception came in the end zone in the first quarter, stopping UMD's 10-play drive and keeping the Corsairs off the scoreboard. His second pick came with 12 seconds left in the third quarter and PSU up 17-14, and was returned 91 yards for a touchdown. It is the second straight week that Zentek produced a pick-six, having gone 86 yards with an interception for a TD a week earlier at Western Connecticut.

PSU, 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the MASCAC, is off to its best start since 2007 and is ranked fourth in this week's New England Division III poll. The Panthers travel to Westfield State University this Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.

A 5-2 defender, McPherson helped anchor a PSU defense that allowed just one goal in two LEC victories. PSU held Southern Maine to four shots in a 2-1 Panther victory, and limited Western Connecticut to four shots in a 6-0 Panther triumph. McPherson also scored the game-winning goal against Western Conn., putting PSU up 1-0 in the third minute of the game with her second goal of the season.

The Panthers, 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the LEC, have won five games in a row heading into a conference encounter Wednesday evening (6:00 p.m.) at Salem State University.
