Panthers led the nation in 2016 in turnover margin
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University football team has been declared the 2016-17 Division III statistical champion for Turnover Margin Per Game, according to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
The Panthers were ranked #1 out of 244 teams in turnover margin per game. The PSU defense captured 40 takeaways by recovering 19 fumbles and picking off 21 passes while the offense was limited to 15 giveaways on nine fumbles and six interceptions. Plymouth State tied for the national lead with the 19 fumble recoveries and ranked eighth nationally with 21 interceptions.
The Panthers completed the 2016 season with a 6-4 record under head coach Paul Castonia, who completed his 14th season at Plymouth State. Picked to place ninth in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) in the preseason poll, the Panthers finished 4-4 in conference play and finished tied for third, the best conference finish since 2009.
