Panthers move to 2-0 as Szulc scores three TDs
NEWTON, Mass. – Sophomore Jacob Szulc (Concord, N.H.) caught six balls for 94 yards and three scores as Plymouth State University knocked off Mount Ida, 27-0, in a non-conference football game at Alumni Field.
Szulc put the Panthers ahead 7-0 after pulling in a 21-yard touchdown pass from junior Zack Edwards (Brookfield, Mass.) five minutes into the first quarter.
Sophomore running back David Hamilton (Westville, N.H.) capped a five-play, 30-yard drive with a four-yard TD run to double the PSU lead just before the end of the first quarter.
Szulc added a pair of third quarter TD receptions from distances of 22 yards and 37 yards to cap the scoring. Edwards finished 15-of-22 for 191 yards and the three scores.
Graduate student Zach Ziemba (Manchester, N.H.) added to his outstanding Plymouth State career with his eighth interception, as the PSU defense held Mount Ida to just eight first downs and under 200 total yards. Senior Joe Esposito (Hackettstown, N.J.), junior Grant McGregor (Burlington, Conn.) and sophomore Eric Smith (Seekonk, Mass.) each finished with six tackles, with Esposito adding a sack.
Hamilton finished with a game-high 49 yards on the ground, while Szulc's 96 yards receiving were the best of any Panther wideout this season.
Plymouth State is back on the road again next week, when the Panthers travel to Western Connecticut State University for their MASCAC opener. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
