PSU Football still third in latest New England D-III Football Poll

Panthers continue to roll; regular season finale on Saturday

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University picked up 12 points in the sixth edition of the Grinold Chapter New England Division III football weekly rankings, but the Panthers remain in third place following Saturday's 17-0 blanking of Westfield State University.

Undefeated Springfield College (148 points) and Trinity College (135 points) maintained their holds on the top two spots. Springfield collected 13 of 15 first place votes, with Trinity and PSU garnering one apiece. PSU held steady in third with 108 points, while Husson (83 points) and Western Connecticut (83 points) moved into a tie for fourth.

Framingham State (78 points) is sixth and Curry College (72 points) takes seventh, with Amherst (50 points), Western New England (38 points) and WPI (28 points) rounding out the top ten.

The Panthers improved to 8-1 on the year after a 17-0 whitewash of Westfield State on Senior Day at Currier Field. The 8-1 mark matches the 2008 and 2007 teams as the best nine game starts since the 1995 team won its first nine games. The 2008 team finished 10-2 on its way to a New England Football Conference (NEFC) title and NCAA Tournament appearance, while the 2007 squad finished 9-1, losing in the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl.

PSU wraps up its regular season with a final MASCAC contest at Fitchburg State on Saturday (Nov. 4), with kickoff set for noon. A Panther win, coupled with a win by Framingham State over Western Connecticut, would cement PSU's first MASCAC title and guarantee an NCAA Tournament game.

The New England Division III Football Poll is presented by the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation, which also serves as the title sponsor of the weekly Gold Helmet Awards presented by the New England Football Writers Association throughout the season.

A 15-member panel representing all five New England Division III playing conferences serves as the voters in this year's poll. For more information on the Grinold Chapter of the National Football Foundation, please visit
