Huesman and Martin earn major weekly awards
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University junior Malcolm Huesman (Burlington, Vt.) and freshman Jeremy Martin (Charlton, Mass.) were both honored with major Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) weekly football awards for their roles in Saturday's MASCAC title-clinching 24-7 win over Fitchburg State University.
Huesman, a 5-10 linebacker, was named the MASCAC Football Defensive Player of the Week after recording 10 tackles, including a team-high seven solos, and adding a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown. Huesman's pick-six came with the team leading 17-7 with just over three minutes remaining, icing the win for the Panthers.
Martin, a 5-11 kicker, was named the MASCAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week. The rookie drilled a 36-yard field goal with 9:08 remaining to increase the Panthers' lead to 17-7. He finished three-of-three on PATs, while adding 230 yards on six punts, including three that were downed inside the 20-yard line. Martin's foot also accounted for 221 kickoff yards, a 44.2 yards/kick average.
The Panther win, coupled with Framingham State's 39-35 win over Western Connecticut, guaranteed Plymouth State at least a share of the regular season title. PSU will receive the MASCAC's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament, as the team holds the tiebreaker over Framingham State after PSU's 16-13 win over the Rams in week seven.
It will be the program's fifth appearance in the tournament and first since 2008. PSU will learn its seeding and opponent for the NCAA Tournament during the NCAA Division III Football Selection Show, which will air on NCAA.com on Sunday, November 12 (5:30 p.m.).
