PSU Football player honored for sportsmanship

Esposito named to MASCAC Fall Sportsmanship Team

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University senior Joe Esposito (Hackettstown, N.J.) was recognized by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) with inclusion on the 2017 Fall Sportsmanship Team for football.

The MASCAC Sportsmanship Team is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport, that best demonstrates the values of the MASCAC and its Sportsmanship Statement, regardless of their overall performance or statistics for the season.

Esposito was one of 47 student-athletes overall recognized by the conference, and one of nine of the league's football players to earn the honor.

A 6-1 defensive lineman, Esposito helped lead the MASCAC's top scoring defense. He ended the year with team-highs of 3.5 sacks and 11 tackles for a loss, while forcing one fumble and breaking up two passes. He finished sixth on the team with 45 tackles, including 20 solos.

The PSU defense ended the regular season allowing just 9.8 points per game, tops in the MASCAC and the fifth lowest mark in the nation.

The Panthers went 9-2 on the year, the best record since the 2008 team finished 10-2, and secured the program's first MASCAC title to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in program history. PSU had its season come to an end in a first round game against the College at Brockport on November 18.
