PSC Upends Keene State, 3-1, in LEC Opener
PLYMOUTH, NH - Junior Jill Sutherland (Rockport, MA) scored two goals and senior Kim Webster (Portsmouth, NH) added a goal and an assist Saturday to lead the Plymouth State College field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Keene State College in the annual Homecoming game at Arold Field.
The game was the first Little East Conference contest for both schools, with the LEC sponsoring field hockey in 1998 for the first time. Both teams are now 4-3 overall.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead with nine minutes remaining in the first half on an unassisted goal by Webster, her second of the season. PSC extended its lead to 2-0 three minutes into the second half as Sutherland connected on her first goal of the contest and third of the season.
The Owls cut the lead in half with 25 minutes remaining when Kelly Smith (Lisbon, NH) scored her third goal of the season. But Sutherland scored the insurance marker, with an assist from Webster, with less than a minute to play, to finalize the outcome.
Plymouth State, which outshot Keene State 17-9 in the contest, avenged last year's battles against the Owls. The Panthers were shut out 1-0 twice in 1997 by KSC, including a triple-overtime decision in the ECAC New England Tournament.
PSC goalkeeper Chris Perruzzi (So. Portland, ME) registered nine saves, and Keene State's Erin Bonner (East Stroudsburg, PA) made eight saves.
The Panthers, ranked 21st in this week's NFHCA Division III national poll, plays another Little East Conference game Tuesday (Sept. 29) at Southern Maine (3:30 p.m.). Keene State returns home Sunday (Sept. 27) to host Bates.
