UMD Nips PSC Field Hockey in OT

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Junior Becky Chase (Westport, MA) scored the only goal of the game in the second overtime Saturday to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth a 1-0 victory over Plymouth State College in a decisive Little East Conference field hockey game. T

he outcome creates a three-way tie for first place in the LEC field hockey regular season standings between UMD, PSC and Keene State, all with 3-1 records. Keene State wins the tiebreaker, and will host next weekend's first annual conference tournament. Top-seeded Keene State will host the winner of Thursday's game between Southern Maine and Eastern Connecticut Saturday (Oct. 31), while second-seeded UMD will meet third-seeded PSC in the other semi-final. The championship game is slated for Sunday (Nov. 1) in Keene.

It was a defensive battle between PSC and UMD, with Plymouth State holdign a 13-3 edge in shots on goal during regulation play. With the team sizes reduced in overtime, PSC was able to put two more shots on goal, but Chase got the one that counted for the Corsairs, scoring one minute, 23 seconds into the second overtime with an assist from Ashley Dorman (Harwich, MA).

UMD goalie Jennifer Burrows (Hubbardston, MA) registered six saves for her fifth shutout of the season, while PSC's Chris Perruzzi (South Portland, ME) made four saves. Before playing in the LEC Tournament, PSC, 7-7 overall, plays its final home game of the season Tuesday (Oct. 27) against nationally-ranked Middlebury (2:00 p.m.). UMD, 8-9 overall, is finished until the LEC Tournament.
