FITCHBURG, Mass. - Plymouth State College clinched the Little East Conference Field Hockey regular season title and the top seed in next week's conference tournament Tuesday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Fitchburg State College.
Junior Sarah Lynch (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) found the back of the net 2:53 into the second half for the game's only goal. The Panthers extended their winning streak to 11 games, longest since beginning the 1993 campaign with a 17-0 record.
Freshman goalkeeper Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) turned away a pair of Fitchburg State shots while recording her sixth shutout of the season. After starting the season at 0-3, PSC has improved to 11-3 overall and 9-0 in the conference. PSC will receive a first-round bye in the LEC Tournament, and are scheduled to host the semi-finals and final at Arold Field on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 27-28.
The Falcons drop to 9-6 overall and 4-5 in the LEC. Angela Buffington registered seven saves as PSC outshot the Falcons, 9-2.
PSC plays a pair of home games this week - Thursday (Oct. 19) vs. New England College (3:30 pm.) and Saturday (Oct. 21) against Worcester State (1 p.m.), before wrapping up the regular season Sunday (Oct. 22) at St. Michael's (2 p.m.).
