Panthers need two OTs to edge NEC

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Courtney O'Sullivan (East Kingston, NH) scored her seventh goal of the season with 6:55 remaining in the second overtime Thursday afternoon, leading Plymouth State College to a 2-1 victory over New England College in non-conference field hockey action at Arold Field.

The victory was Plymouth State's 12th in a row, and improves the Panthers to 12-3 overall, while the Pilgrims had their nine-game winning streak snapped and drop to 11-2. NEC had defeated PSC last season on penalty strokes when the teams were tied after two overtimes.

After a scoreless first half, PSC got on the board first with 15:20 remaining in the second half when senior Kerri Tarpy (Biddeford, Maine) connected on her seventh goal of the season, with an assist from classmate Jaci Harradon (Yarmouth, Maine). NEC answered just four minutes later, when junior Liza Barker (Greene, Maine) scored the tying goal, with an assist from senior Jill Jones (East Andover, NH).

O'Sullivan's game winning goal came after PSC was attempting to convert a penalty corner. The ball was deflected from the left side to the right goalmouth where O'Sullivan was standing alone, and she knocked it into the empty net for the PSC victory. O'Sullivan and Tarpy share the team scoring lead with seven goals.

NEC keeper Krista Milroy (West Springfield, Mass.) played a strong game in the Pilgrim goal, making six saves, while PSC keeper Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) was solid as well, making four saves.

PSC wraps up the regular season with a pair of games this weekend - Saturday in the last regular season home game against Worcester State (1 p.m.) and Sunday at St. Michael's (2 p.m.). NEC concludes its regular season Saturday at home against Endicott (1 p.m.).
