Keene State nips PSC in 2OT at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.- Keene State College's Melissa Harnch-Smith converted a penalty stroke with 9:09 left in the second overtime Sunday to lead the Owls to a 2-1 victory over Plymouth State College in the consolation game of the Skidmore Invitational Field Hockey Tournament.

The Owls, which avenged a pair of one-goal losses to PSC last season, improve to 1-2, while Plymouth State is also 1-2.

Keene State took the lead on a first-half goal by Tanya Strong, an unassisted tally at 11:14. The score remained 1-0 until 9:32 of the second half, when PSC junior Melanie McAvey (Grafton, Mass.) put the Panthers on the board with the tying goal. PSC had a 20-8 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-7 edge in penalty corners. Lindsay Hamilton had a big game in net for Keene State with 11 saves, while Panther sophomore keeper Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) made 13 saves.

Plymouth State, the defending Little East Conference champion, begins defense of its title next Saturday (Sept. 15) with a 1:00 p.m. contest at UMass Dartmouth. PSC won all 10 LEC regular season games and two tournament match-ups last fall.
