PSC hands USM first LEC loss
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College senior Sacha Jackson (Sangerville, Maine) scored in the second half to lead the Panthers to a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference field hockey contest at Arold Field.
The victory gives PSC a 5-4 overall record and a 3-1 mark in LEC games, while USM falls to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Husky senior Laura Jurkowski (East Longmeadow, Mass) received a red card in the second half with 24:15 on the clock for a flagrant foul after play had stopped. Up a player for the rest of the game, the Panthers turned up the heat until Jackson scored unassisted in front of the net with 15:39 remaining. She becomes the fourth Panther with a team-high three goals this season.
PSC finished with a 23-8 advantage in shots on goal. USM senior keeper Andrea Guerette (Fairfield, Maine) stopped 16 shots, and Panther sophomore goalie Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) made five saves to earn her first shutout of the season.
The Panthers return to action Sunday at 12:00 p.m. with a non-conference home game against Colby College.
