Matteson leads PSC past Salem State

SALEM, Mass. - Junior Jill Matteson (Chatham, Mass.) scored two goals and one assist Tuesday to help Plymouth State College to a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over Salem State College in a Little East Conference field hockey game.

The victory is PSC's fourth in a row, improving the Panthers to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the LEC. Salem State drops to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

The Vikings jumped out to a surprising 2-0 lead in the opening 15 minutes of the game, as Tammy Boyden and Jessie Gill tallied for Salem State. PSC got one back before halftime, as senior Sacha Jackson (Sangerville, Maine) notched her fourth of the season with senior Megan Fournier (East Waterboro, Maine) assisting. Matteson tied the score just 2:44 into the second half with her second of the season. A little over a minute later, junior Katie Dodge (Sanbornton, N.H.) put PSC ahead with her fourth of the season, thanks to an assist from sophomore Andrea Musante (Amherst, Mass.). Matteson added an insurance marker with seven minutes remaining, her second of the game and third goal in the last two outings.

PSC dominated in the shots on goal department. Salem State goalkeeper Emily King made 24 saves, while Panther keeper Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) was forced to make only one save. Plymouth State returns home to host Bridgewater State College on Saturday (Oct. 6) in a Little East Conference contest at Arold Field (1:00 p.m.).
