PSC picked 1st in LEC pre-season poll

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two-time defending Little East Conference champion Plymouth State College received five first-place votes and claimed the top spot in the annual pre-season field hockey poll of the league's head coaches.

The Panthers have posted a 15-5 overall record the past two years. Included in these totals were a perfect 10-0 league slate in 2000 and a 9-1 ledger in 2001. PSC culminated each campaign by capturing the LEC championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

Keene State College, the only other conference school to win the post-season tournament, tallied one first-place vote in this year's poll and finished runner-up. The Owls, who were 10-10 last season and finished third in the LEC with a 7-3 mark, won the first two conference tournaments in 1998 and 1999.

The University of Southern Maine (13-9 overall last season, 8-2 in conference play), also collected a first-place vote and finished third, narrowly ahead of Eastern Connecticut State University (11-9, 7-3). Worcester State College (15-8, 6-4) and Bridgewater State College (9-8, 7-3) also each received a first-place vote and finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Rounding out the poll were Westfield State College (8-8, 5-5), the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (3-13, 2-7), Fitchburg State College (4-14, 0-10), Salem State College (3-12, 2-8), and Framingham State College (3-14, 1-9).
