PSC stops 7th-ranked Springfield

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season with 36 seconds remaining in the first half, and that proved to be the game-winner as Plymouth State College's field hockey team defeated Springfield College 1-0 Saturday at Arold Field.

The win improves PSC to 3-0 on the season with three shutouts, while Springfield, ranked #7 in the latest national Division III field hockey poll, suffers its first loss of the season and drop to 3-1. It was Springfield's fourth one-goal game this season.

Plymouth State had a 17-4 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) registered the shutout in the Panther net, her second of the season. Ward also extended her career shutout record to 17. Sophomore Lindsay Pardue (Houston, TX) made 17 saves for the Pride.

The game was a battle between a pair of national powers. PSC has made two straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and Springfield reached the national championship in 2000 and the national semifinals in 1999.

The Panthers return to action Thursday (Sept. 19) with a non-conference game at Colby College. Springfield will be at Middlebury Wednesday (Sept. 18) for a 4:00 p.m. game.
