Colby blanks Panthers for PSC's first loss
WATERVILLE, Maine - Sophomore Wendy Bonner (Lexington, Mass.) scored the lone goal and senior Carrie Morin (Augusta, Maine) earned her first collegiate shutout Thursday as the Colby College field hockey team took a 1-0 victory over Plymouth State in a non-conference game.
Colby improved to a 3-0 record heading into Saturday's New England Small College Athletic Conference game at Trinity College. Plymouth State, which had beaten then seventh-ranked Springfield College last week, suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 3-1.
Bonner scored the first goal of the season allowed by the Panthers. Her hard shot from near the top of the circle came off a penalty corner just 6:27 into the first half. Senior forward Lyndsay Peters (Freeport, Maine) and junior midfielder Kelly Welch (East Dennis, Mass.) had assists. Bonner has four goals in Colby's three games.
Morin made seven saves for her first shutout, including some sprawling stops late in the game on scrambles in front of the net. Morin, who is playing collegiate field hockey for the first time this year at Colby, has allowed only two goals in three games. PSC junior Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) made 14 saves and now has a 0.27 goals against average.
The Panthers return to action Saturday (Sept. 21) with the Little East Conference opener at Arold Field against UMass Dartmouth (2:00 p.m.). PSC is the two-time defending LEC champion.
