PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) scored the only goal of the game with 25 seconds remaining in the first overtime Saturday, leading Plymouth State College's field hockey team to a 1-0 triumph over arch-rival Keene State College at Arold Field.
The win improves PSC to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in LEC games, while the Owls drop to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Panthers have now won 12 consecutive LEC games, dating back to last year's loss at Keene State.
Plymouth State had a 26-6 advantage in shots on goal, including a 22-4 margin in regulation play, but neither team was able to score. PSC finally got the game-winner late in the first extra frame with Gutowski deflecting home a shot by senior defender Kristle Wheeler (Brandon, Vt.).
Junior goalkeeper Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) made five saves to post her fourth shutout of the season. Senior Amy Carroll (Brunswick, Maine) recorded 17 saves for the Owls.
The Panthers return to action Wednesday (Oct. 2) at Southern Maine (3:30 p.m.). KSC returns home to host Middlebury Wednesday (6:00 p.m.).
