PSC extends winning streak to nine
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College registered its ninth shutout of the season Sunday, defeating Worcester State College 3-0 in a Little East Conference field hockey game at Arold Field.
The victory was Plymouth State's ninth in a row, improving the team to 12-1 overall and 8-0 in LEC action. Worcester State drops to 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the LEC. PSC has won 15 consecutive LEC regular season contests, and 27 of 28 over the last three years.
Plymouth State outshot the Lancers 12-4 in the first half, but had to settle for a scoreless tie at the break. The Panthers had a 17-2 advantage in shots in the second half and potted three goals to win going away. Junior goalkeeper Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) needed to make just one save to post her sixth shutout of the year and extend her school record for shutouts to 21.
Senior Melanie McAvey (North Grafton, Mass.) put the Panthers on the board with the game-winner five minutes into the second half. Senior Marushka Eddy (Nantucket, Mass.), with an assist from sophomore Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.), made it 2-0 midway through the second half, and freshman Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.), with an assist from senior Katie Dodge (Sanbornton, N.H.), added an insurance goal with three minutes remaining.
Junior Alisha Bates (Palmer, Mass.) had a solid effort in the Lancers' goal, making 20 saves.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season with three games this week - a non-conference contest Tuesday at home against New England College (3:00 p.m.), a make-up LEC game Wednesday at Fitchburg State (3:00 p.m.), and the regular season finale Saturday at home against Framingham State (2:00 p.m.).
Tuesday's game matches PSC, ranked #1 in the NCAA New England West Region, against NEC, ranked #1 in the NCAA New England East Region.
