Springfield hands PSU Field Hockey 2nd straight OT loss

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior Kim Stevens (North Knox, Maine) scored a goal off a penalty corner 2:56 into the first overtime Saturday afternoon, giving Springfield College a 3-2 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference field hockey game at Benedum Field.

The outcome was PSU's second straight overtime loss, matching the 2-1 decision suffered to Colby in the season opener last Saturday. Springfield, which is ranked 10th in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll, improves to 3-1 on the season.

PSU freshman Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H.) opened the scoring just 2:32 into the game with her first goal of the season. SC junior Lydia Grant (Granby, Conn.) tied the game when she netted a goal with 10:17 left in the opening frame.

The Pride took its first lead of the day three minutes into the second half when junior Jen Durgin (Gorham, Maine) scored her first goal of the season. The Panthers knotted the score and forced overtime when freshman Shannon Santamaria (Northfield, N.H.) scored off a pass from sophomore Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) with 8:44 remaining in regulation play.

Plymouth State outshot Springfield by an 11-7 margin. Junior Lindsey Pardue (Houston, Tex.) made nine saves to record the win for the Pride, while PSU freshman Erin Kindl (Granby, Conn.) made four saves in her collegiate debut.

PSU, 0-2, will seek its first victory Monday with a non-conference Granite State contest at Franklin Pierce (5:00 p.m.).
