Panther Field Hockey nips Southern Maine, 3-2
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) scored two goals and freshman Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H.) broke a 2-2 tie with 12:49 remaining Wednesday afternoon to give the Plymouth State University field hockey team a 3-2 victory over Little East Conference rival University of Southern Maine.
The decision marked USM's first conference loss of the season, dropping the Huskies to 3-1 in the LEC and 7-3 overall. PSU rebounded from Saturday's disappointing loss to Keene State with the victory on Wednesday, improving the Panthers to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
It was a see-saw battle at Arold Field. The visitors got on the board first when senior Deedra Boudreau (Camden, Maine) knocked in her fourth goal of the season midway through the first half. PSU came back to tie it before the intermission on Gutowski's first of the game and first of the season with 7:43 on the first-half clock.
Gutowski gave the Panthers the lead with her second goal eight minutes into the second half, with junior Caitlin Moran (Rowley, Mass.) picking up the assist. The Huskies answered with 15:53 to play when senior Renee Heath (Brunswick, Maine) finished off a penalty corner from teammate Darci Holland (Buckfield, Maine), her fourth of the season to tie it at 2-2.
Bates scored the eventual game-winner for the Panthers, her third of the year, with an assist from senior Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.).
Senior goalie Kerry Brady (Jefferson, N.H.) registered the win in the Panther net, making seven saves. USM senior Jessie Superchi (Campton, N.H.), from nearby Plymouth High School, made six saves for the Huskies.
Plymouth State plays another LEC home game Saturday against Westfield State (2:00 p.m.). Southern Maine returns home to host Worcester State Saturday in an LEC contest (2:00 p.m.).
