PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H.) knocked in two goals Saturday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to a 5-1 victory over Bridgewater State College in a Little East Conference field hockey game at Arold Field.
Plymouth State improved its mark of 5-1 in Little East play and 6-4 overall, while the Bears leave with a 4-2 record in the LEC and 5-4 overall.
Junior Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) gave the Panthers the lead when she was set up nicely by sophomore Lilly Silva (Lowell, MA), who had two assists on the day. Bates followed up with the next two goals for PSU, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead early in the second half. Senior Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) connected with PSU's fourth goal of the day, and junior Caitlin Moran (Rowley, Mass.) rounded out the scoring.
Bridgewater managed only one goal on the day, with senior Katie Hinchliff (New Bedford, Mass.) putting that mark on the board. Bears goalie Lauren Mazzola (Westwood, Mass.) came up with seven saves on the day while Plymouth State senior Kerry Brady (Jefferson, NH) and freshman Erin Kindl (Granby, Conn.) combined for seven stops.
Plymouth State will be back in action Thursday with a non-conference game home against Endicott (4:00 p.m.). Bridgewater State returns home to host Endicott on Tuesday.
