WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Andrea McCallister (Leominster, Mass.) scored three goals to lead Worcester State College to a 5-4 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference field hockey game at Coughlin Field.
McCallister scored all three of her goals in the first half as the hosts took a 4-1 halftime lead. PSU came back to outscore WSC 3-1 in the second half, but the Lancers held on for the win. Worcester State improves to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the LEC, while Plymouth State had its seven-game winning streak stopped and drops to 9-5 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
Sophomore Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) had a big day for the Panther offense, as she had a hand in all four goals. She scored PSU's first and last goals, and assisted on the other two. Silva has five goals and two assists in the last two games, and has taken over the team scoring lead with 10 goals and eight assists.
PSU began its second-half comeback when Silva set up freshman Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H.) and junior Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) for goals about two minutes apart to cut the deficit to 4-3. Junior Ashley Alia (Leominster, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winning goal for WSC with 14:19 remaining to put the Lancers up by two again, and despite a late goal by Silva, WSC held on for the win.
Senior goalie Kerry Brady (Jefferson, N.H.) made five saves for PSU in the first half, and freshman Erin Kindl (Granby, Conn.) made 10 saves in the second half. Worcester State goalie Alisha Bates (Palmer, Mass.) finished with 12 saves.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season with a pair of road games next week - Tuesday at New England College (3:00 p.m.) and Saturday at Framingham State (3:00 p.m.).
