HENNIKER, N.H. - Plymouth State University picked up a non-conference field hockey victory Tuesday afternoon with a 2-1 triumph over Granite State rival New England College.
The Panthers have won eight of nine games in October to improve to 10-5 overall, while the Pilgrims drop to 10-6 overall.
Plymouth State got on the board at the 12-minute mark of the first half as junior Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) notched her 10th goal of the season, with freshman Christina Farias (East Dennis, Mass.) assisting on the play. NEC battled back a minute later as Brittney Vogrin found the net to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Shannon Santamaria (Northfield, N.H.) tallied what would end up as the game-winner with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
Neither team was able to break through in the second half, and the Panthers held on for the win. PSU senior goalie Kerry Brady (Jefferson, N.H.) made seven saves in the second half and 12 in the game to capture the win. Cassandra Hudson made eight saves for NEC as the Panthers outshot the Pilgrims 16-12.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season this Friday with a Little East Conference game at Framingham State (3:00 p.m.). The LEC Tournament begins next week, and the Panthers will likely host a home game next Tuesday at Arold Field.
