Plymouth State Field Hockey wins Little East Conference opener

-  Plymouth State University held UMass Dartmouth without a shot in the second half Saturday at Arold Field and went on to defeat the Corsairs, 5-1, in the Little East Conference field hockey opener for both schools.

The Panthers overcame a one-goal deficit by scoring four goals in a nine-minute span late in the first half.  PSU's record improves to 3-1, while UMD is still searching for its first victory of the season with its record at 0-4.

Freshman Caitlin DiCecca (Chelmsford, Mass.) started off the offense for the Corsairs, scoring the first goal only 10 minutes into the game.

PSU started its comeback with 10:09 left in the opening half with an unassisted goal by senior Annie Metz (Chelmsford, Mass.).  Five minutes later classmate Caitlin Moran (Rowley, Mass.) added an unassisted goal. The surge continued when freshman Carrie Potts (Quaker Hill, Conn.) scored her first career goal, with senior Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) assisting, and Gutowski added an unassisted goal of her own with 1:25 left to play in the half.

PSU freshman Katie Barany (Middlesex, Vt.) tallied the only goal of the second half.

The home team finished with a decisive advantage in shots on goal, 24-5.  UMD freshman goalie Kaitlyn Koza (Bellingham, Mass.) registered 11 saves while the tandem PSU freshmen goalies Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Leah Curtin (Londonderry, N.H.) combined for four stops.

Plymouth State is back in action again Sunday, hosting Bates (11:30 a.m.).  UMD returns home to host Worcester State on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
