Moran leads PSU Field Hockey past E.Conn. in LEC Tournament

PLYMOUTH, N.H.

- Senior Caitlin Moran (Rowley, Mass.) registered a goal and three assists Tuesday afternoon at Arold Field to lead second-seeded Plymouth State University to a 4-1 victory over seventh-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University in the first round of the 2004 Little East Conference Field Hockey Tournament.

The Panthers move on to the LEC semifinals Friday at top-seeded Keene State.  PSU, 14-3 overall and riding an eight-game winning streak, will face sixth-seeded Worcester State College (11-6) in Friday's second semifinal (2:30 p.m.), as the Lancers upset third-seeded Fitchburg State on Tuesday, 4-0.  Keene State will play fourth-seeded Framingham State in Friday's first semifinal (12 noon).  ECSU concludes its season at 7-13 overall.

Senior Annie Metz (North Chelmsford, Mass.) put PSU on the board first Tuesday, finishing off a penalty corner with 18:27 on the clock as Moran and junior Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) picked up assists on the play.  Silva then knocked home a pass from Moran with 6:46 remaining in the half, recording her LEC-leading 22nd goal of the season and giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead at intermission.

Senior Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) gave the Panthers a three-goal lead six minutes into the second half, deflecting in her 12th goal of the season on a ball from Moran.  The visitors broke the shutout with 15:30 remaining when freshman Stephanie Mongelli (Pequannock, N.J.) finished off a pass from junior Erika Profenno (South Portland, Maine) for her sixth goal of the season.

Moran finished off her terrific afternoon by scoring her fourth goal of the season on a long shot from just inside the circle with 6:28 to play.

PSU finished with a 23-5 advantage in shots.  Freshman goalie Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) recorded four saves for the Panthers, and junior Damaly Auguste (Stamford, Conn.) made 14 stops for ECSU.

Friday's semifinal game will be a rematch of the regular season game on Oct. 23, when PSU defeated Worcester State, 3-0, in Plymouth.
