Castleton State rallies to upset PSU Field Hockey

PLYMOUTH, N.H.

- Freshman Carolyn Griggs (Lincoln, Vt.) capped a wild rally Wednesday afternoon for the Castleton State College field hockey team, scoring the game-winning goal with 1:40 remaining in overtime to help the Spartans overcome a four-goal deficit and defeat Plymouth State University, 6-5, in a non-conference game at Arold Field.

Castleton State scored in the first five minutes of the game to take a 1-0 lead, but Plymouth State came back with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead at halftime.  The Panthers extended their lead to 5-1 with the first three goals of the second half.  Sophomore Jenna Lace (Pascoag, R.I.) scored her first two goals of the season for PSU, while junior Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H.) and seniors Morgan Butters (Stow, Maine) and Katie Kovacs (Hampton, N.H.) added one goal apiece.

The Spartans started their comeback with a pair of goals just 22 seconds apart, and added two more to tie the game at 5-5 with 11:09 on the clock.  Freshman Carrie Black (Warrensburg, N.Y.) potted a pair for the Spartans, while freshman Brook Towslee (Woodford, Vt.), senior Jamie Bell (Starksboro, Vt.) and freshman Heather Loomis (Bennington, Vt.) tallied one each.

PSU finished with a 54-25 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 margin in the extra session, but the visitors pulled off the upset.  The Panthers defeated the Spartans last season, 7-1.

Freshman goalie Jessica Viens (Waterbury Center, Vt.) finished with 13 saves for the Spartans, while sophomores Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Leah Curtin (Londonderry, N.H.) combined to make 10 stops for PSU.

PSU, 1-1, plays its next four games on the road, beginning with the Little East Conference opener this Saturday at UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.).  Castleton State, 1-2, plays again Saturday at the University of New England (4:30 p.m.)
