PSU Field Hockey dumps UMass Dartmouth in LEC opener

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Plymouth State University got two goals apiece from three different players Saturday afternoon and went on to post a 6-1 victory over UMass Dartmouth in the Little East Conference field hockey opener for both schools at the UMD Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Jenna Lace (Pascoag, R.I.) scored a pair of first-half goals to lead the Panthers, while adding a pair of second-half assists. Senior Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) and junior Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) tallied twice each in the second half to put the Corsairs away. PSU is now 2-1 overall, while UMD falls to 1-1 overall.

Silva's two goals established two PSU career records. She how has 49 goals and 114 points in her career, breaking the previous all-time school standards held by Terry Galley, who had 48 goals and 110 points from 1981-84.

Sophomore Erin Langan (Townsend, Mass.) scored with 14:50 remaining in the first half for the Corsairs.

Senior Mel Dixon (Mattapoisett, Mass.), junior Christina Farias (East Dennis, Mass.) and sophomore Heidi Hand (Portsmouth, N.H.) also collected assists for PSU. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) had seven saves in the Panther net, while junior Jessica Tavares (Dartmouth, Mass.) had nine for the Corsairs.

Both teams return to action Tuesday with non-conference games, PSU traveling to Bates (6:00 p.m.) while the Corsairs will host Clark (4:00 p.m.)
