PSU Field Hockey captures road win at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine - Plymouth State University improved its field hockey season record to 3-1 Tuesday afternoon with a 3-1 non-conference victory over Bates College. It was the season opener for Bates, which is coached by former PSU coach Wynn Hohlt.

Sophomore Heidi Hand (Portsmouth, N.H.) opened the scoring for Plymouth State when she scored her first of the season midway through the first half, with classmate Jenna Lace (Pascoag, R.I.) assisting. Bates goalkeeper Sarah Judice (Granby, Conn.) made a clutch save on a penalty stroke to maintain the 1-0 score through halftime.

Junior Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H.) scored her first of the season to put the Panthers up 2-0 early in the second half, with an assist from senior Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) The Bobcats came back with a goal of their own 1:30 later when Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal unassisted.

Silva struck again with 17:48 remaining from junior Christina Farias (East Dennis, Mass.) to give the Panthers their two-goal margin back.

Bates finished with a 20-19 advantage in shots. Judice finished with eight saves, while sophomore Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) recorded five for the Panthers.

Plymouth State plays a pair of road games, its third and fourth in a row, this weekend with encounters Saturday at Little East Conference foe Westfield State (12:30 p.m.) and Sunday at non-conference Springfield (2:00 p.m.) Springfield is ranked ninth in this week's NFHCA Division III National Coaches poll.
