PSU Field Hockey edges Bridgewater State in overtime

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Lilly Silva (Lowell Mass.) scored two minutes into overtime Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State University rallied to defeat Bridgewater State College, 2-1, in a Little East Conference field hockey game at Arold Field.

BSC appeared headed to a 1-0 upset victory, but senior Katie Kovacs (Hampton, N.H.) put PSU on the board with just 25 seconds left in regulation play to force the extra session. Silva's goal in OT was her 13th of the season and her fifth game-winner. PSU extends its winning streak to six games, improving to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play, while the Bears dropped their seventh straight to fall to 2-9 overall and 2-6 in the LEC.

Junior Laurie Allinson (Berwick, Maine) set up the game-winner as she intercepted a BSC pass in the midfield, dribbled down the field and slipped a pass to Silva on the left post, who hammered it home.

The Panthers controlled much of the first half as they held an 11-2 advantage in shots and a 6-2 margin in penalty corners, but could not get on the board as it was scoreless going into halftime.

PSU dominated the second half as well but it was Bridgewater State recording the first goal of the game when senior Erin Lonergan (Foxboro, Mass.) scored less than three minutes into the second half, assisted by sophomore Robin Serino (Forestdale, Mass.)

The Bears were less than a minute away from the upset but PSU sophomore Jenna Lace (Pascoag, RI) found senior Kovacs for her third goal of the season, sending the game into overtime.

PSU finished with a 21-6 advantage in shots for the game. BSC senior goalkeeper Nicole Downs (Hanover, Mass.) was busy all afternoon, finishing with 16 saves, while Panther goalie Leah Curtin (Londonderry, N.H.) registered two saves.

Plymouth State is home again Monday for a make-up game at Arold Field against Salem State (4:00 p.m.) Bridgewater State is right back in action Sunday on the road again, playing a make-up game with Salve Regina (1:00 p.m.)
