PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University field hockey team recorded its seventh straight victory Monday afternoon, defeating Salem State College, 3-0, in a Little East Conference make-up game at Arold Field.
The Panthers, who outshot the visitors 14-3, put one goal on the board in the first half and sealed the victory with a pair of second-half tallies. PSU improves to 10-3 overall and 7-1 in LEC play, while Salem State drops to 3-11 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
With the victory, Plymouth State moves into a tie with Fitchburg State for first place in the LEC, both teams with 7-1 conference records. PSU plays at Fitchburg State Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Junior Mel Dixon (Mattapoisett, Mass.) scored first for Plymouth State when her centering pass deflected off a Viking defender and into the goal with 12:57 remaining on the first-half clock. It was Dixon's first goal of the season.
Senior Katie Kovacs (Hampton, N.H.) gave the Panthers a two-goal lead nine minutes into the second half, redirecting a crossing pass from junior Laurie Allinson (Berwick, Maine). Senior Lilly Silva (Lowell Mass.) added her conference-leading 14th goal of the season for insurance with 16:37 to play.
Panther sophomore goalie Leah Curtin (Londonderry, N.H.) registered two saves to earn her second shutout and her sixth straight victory. SSC freshman Christine Ferreira (Milford, Mass.) was solid in the Vikings' net, making 10 saves.
Salem State is back in action Wednesday with a visit to Bridgewater State (4:00 p.m.)
