PSU Field Hockey blanks Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass. - Plymouth State University broke the tie atop the Little East Conference field hockey standings Wednesday night with a 3-0 whitewash of Fitchburg State College at FSC's Elliot Field, snapping the Falcons' school-record 11-game winning streak.

PSU recorded its eighth straight victory and improved to 11-3 overall and 8-1 in conference play, while Fitchburg State fell to 12-2 overall and 7-2 in the LEC. The Panthers now have sole possession of first place in the LEC with two conference games to play, while the Falcons are one of four schools with only two conference losses.

After both teams had several solid scoring opportunities, the Panthers got onto the scoreboard first when senior Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.), the LEC's top scorer, found the back of the net for her 15th of the season 16:39 into the match. The first half was closely contested with Plymouth State holding a tight 9-7 advantage in shots while being awarded six more penalty corners (10 to 4).

The Panthers struck quickly in the second half when junior Christina Farias (East Dennis, Mass.) netted a goal just 23 seconds into the stanza. PSU, who outshot the Falcons 14-5 after intermission, received at insurance goal when junior Laurie Allinson (Berwick, Maine) converted a penalty stroke with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Sophomore Leah Curtin (Londonderry, N.H.) registered eight saves for Plymouth State for her third shutout in the last four games while improving her record to 7-0. Christina Charron (Grafton, Mass.) made 10 saves for Fitchburg State while Abby Ouellet (Amesbury, Mass.) and Eryne Cotter (North Easton, Mass.) were each credited with a defensive save.
