CASTLETON, Vt. - Senior Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) scored three goals Wednesday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University field hockey team to a 6-3 victory over Castleton State College.
The Panthers used a second half surge in the driving rain to put away a determined Castleton State team after the Spartans had come back to tie the game at 2-2 eight minutes into the second half. PSU erased memories of last year's contest in Plymouth, when Castleton overcame a 5-1 second half deficit to pull out a 6-5 overtime victory.
Bates served notice of what was in store for the hometown Spartans just 23 seconds into the game when she scored off an assist from classmate Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) Castleton's Trishia Fellows (Hartland, Vt.) converted a Carolyn Griggs (Lincoln, Vt.) assist into her second goal of the season to tie the game 15 minutes later. Bates would get an unassisted tally with seven minutes remaining in the first half to give the Panthers the lead at the break.
The hosts opened the second half with a goal from Griggs to tie the score. The Panthers would unleash their attack, reeling off three straight goals in a span of four minutes, one by Spadafora, one by freshman Morgan Lemmon (Gilford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and the third goal from Bates. Carrie Black (Warrensburg, N.Y.) brought Castleton within two but Lemmon tacked on an insurance goal for the Panthers with less than two minutes to play to seal the win.
Junior Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) stopped five shots to earn the win for PSU (1-0). The Panthers return home for the Little East Conference opener and home debut this Saturday against UMass Dartmouth (12:00 p.m.)
Trish Clark (East Dover, Vt.) made six saves in the loss for Castleton State (1-2). The Spartans play host to the University of New England on Saturday (2:00 p.m.)
