PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Caitlin DiCecca (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored a pair of goals Saturday afternoon to lift the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to a 2-1 victory over Plymouth State University in the Little East Conference Field Hockey opener for both schools at Arold Field.
DiCecca scored the only goal of the first half to give her team the lead, knocking in a rebound with 16:24 on the clock after PSU junior keeper Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) had made the initial save. DiCecca gave the Corsairs a two-goal lead 12 minutes into the second half, with an assist from classmate Jacqueline Janda (Sterling, Mass.)
Plymouth State tried to mount a comeback and got on the board with just under eight minutes remaining when freshman Morgan Lemmon (Gilford, N.H./Bishop Brady) finished off a scramble in front with her third goal of the season. PSU continued to press but could not score the tying goal.
The home team had a 14-11 advantage in shots, and both teams recorded six penalty corners. Randall made six saves for PSU, and senior goalie Liz Fitzgerald (Danvers, Mass.) earned the victory with 10 saves for the Corsairs.
Plymouth State was picked second in the LEC preseason poll, and UMD was voted sixth.
The Panthers, 1-1 overall, get right back into action Sunday with a non-conference game at Lasell College (1:00 p.m.). UMD, 2-0 overall, resumes play Tuesday at Clark (7:00 p.m.)
