SALEM, Mass. - Senior Kristen Bartlett (Danvers, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal 6:54 into the second overtime Saturday afternoon to lift Salem State College to a 3-2 defeat of Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference field hockey match at Alumni Field.
Plymouth State took leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the Vikings battled back each time on goals by freshman Grace Ghioto (Bass River, Mass.), and then won it in overtime on Bartlett's goal. Salem State improves to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the LEC, while PSU drops to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Freshman Morgan Lemmon (Gilford, N.H./Bishop Brady) put the Panthers on the board two minutes into the game, with an assist from senior Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy), but Ghioto's first goal four minutes later made it a 1-1 game. Lemmon set up sophomore Ashley Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) to give PSU a 2-1 lead midway through the second half, but Ghioto's second goal sent the game into extra sessions.
Bartlett, who is SSC's leading scorer with seven goals, blasted home the game-winner from 10 yards out after receiving a pass from junior Alyson Slaven (Danvers, Mass.)
Both goalkeepers played outstanding between the pipes, SSC sophomore Christina Ferreira (Milford, Mass.) and PSU junior Leah Curtin (Londonderry, N.H.) both making nine saves.
PSU, which has dropped two in a row and five of its last six, looks to get back on the winning track Wednesday with a non-conference game at New England College (3:30 p.m.) Salem State is home again Wednesday vs. Gordon (3:30 p.m.)
