PSU Field Hockey gets past Framingham State on Bates’ late goal

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Senior Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H.) broke a 1-1 tie with 12 minutes remaining Sunday afternoon, knocking in a rebound and giving Plymouth State University's field hockey team a 2-1 victory over Framingham State College in the Little East Conference regular season finale for both schools on windy Maple Street Field.

The excitement of the victory was short-lived for PSU, however, as the team learned that Fitchburg State College had upset Worcester State College in another LEC game, knocking Plymouth State out of contention for this week's upcoming conference tournament. PSU, 7-9 overall, finished in a three-way tie for seventh place in the LEC with a 5-6 mark, but Fitchburg State and Salem State earned playoff berths ahead of Plymouth State due to tiebreaker policies.

Freshman Morgan Lemmon (Gilford, N.H./Bishop Brady) gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead nine minutes into Sunday's contest, with an assist from senior Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) Framingham State came back to tie the game with 13 minutes to go in the first half, as senior Meghan Staffiere (Norwood, Mass.) scored her sixth goal of the season with an assist from junior Nicole Killian (Blackstone, Mass.)

PSU outshot the Rams, 27-16, but couldn't put the game away until Bates' goal with 11:59 remaining on the second-half clock. Framingham State had the advantage in penalty corners, 10-9.

Both goalies turned in outstanding performances. Panther keeper Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) made nine saves, while Ram goalie senior Lindsay McKearney made 13 stops.

Lemmon finishes the season as PSU's scoring leader with nine goals, two assists and 20 points, while Spadafora ended up with seven goals, five assists and 19 points. Bates was third with six goals, a team-high six assists and 18 points, completing her career with 27 goals, 16 assists and 70 points. She is tied for sixth on PSU's career assist list and tied for 12th on the career points list.
